Rides in 2017

Stanford - Hertfordshire
Thursday 19 January 2017
Eleven of us set off headed for Stanford. John a new member, Roy, David R, David W, Sandra, Charlie, Louise, Adrian, Frank C, Geoff and myself. We set off in two groups due to the number of riders, lead by Geoff and Frank C. We did the direct route vis Norton, Stotfold, Arlesey, Henlow, Clifton and Stanford. As we were running early we did an extra loop towards Ireland and right to Southill before heading back to Stanford and The Green Man pub for lunch. John had to leave us early on in the ride due to problems with his bike, I believe. We were met at the Green Man by John and Paul along with Bridget, Gill and Ray. Another good lunch was had here as expected with plenty of amiable chat.
After lunch most of us came back by the direct route turning right at the lights in Stotfold past Fairfield and back to Letchworth. John made his own way back as usual. Paul and Adrian decided to put in a few extra miles and headed out towards Moggerhanger. The weather was sunny most of the time, but very cold with a little wind from time to time, which made it feel colder. On the journey back I could feel a little heat in the sun, which was nice. My mileage was just over 21 with an average of 11.

Shuttleworth - Old Walden, Hertfordshire

Great Offley - Hertfordshire
Thursday 16th March
This mornings ride was to Great Offley.  Eleven of us set off from Wetherspoons. Two new members Maria and Peter joined the regulars Frank C, David and Sandra, David R, Lorayne, Louise, Adrian, myself and Geoff in the lead. Our route was via Willian, Great Wymondley, Redcoats Farm, Little Almshoe, the B656, Hitchwood Hill, Preston, Leys Green and our destination of the Green Man at Great Offley. There we were met for lunch by John, Bedford Paul, Mick, Paul F, Bridget and Gill. so seventeen of us for lunch. An enjoyable lunch was had. This was a new venue for us. They were a little slow on the delivery of one or two lunches, but this was probably due to our group arriving unannounced. John and Bedford Paul made their own way after lunch as usual. Adrian, Paul F and Mick took an alternative route and the rest of us came back the same route we had used on our outward journey, with the exception of turning left past Princess Helena College and heading down the hill to Little Almshoe. The weather was overcast and a little on the cold side, with some headwind. My mileage was just short of 25 at an average of just under 10.

Southill - Bedfordshire
Thursday 20th April 2017
Nine of us left Wetherspoons headed this morning headed for Southill, David R, Geoff, Frank C, Peter, Jeremy, Anne, myself, Sandra with David W leading. I would like to welcome Jeremy a new member and it was good to have Anne back out cycling again. We cycled via Norton, Stotfold, Arlesey, Henlow, Clifton, Stanford arriving at the White Horse Southill for lunch just before midday. We were met there by John and Bedford Paul. David decided not to stop for lunch and continued on his way, no doubt to double his mileage. The rest of us had an enjoyable lunch before heading back. John and Bedford Paul both made their own way as usual while the rest of us used the same route as the outward journey with Frank C leading. The only exception being that at Stotfold traffic lights we turned right heading past Fairfield. The weather was generally overcast with a threat of rain, in fact, after lunch, it started to rain but fortunately, it didn't come to much. A nice easy ride for me today with my mileage being 21.5 at an average of 10.5. Geoff and Peter would have done considerably more as they cycled from Luton.

Jordans Mill - Bedfordshire
Thursday 18th May 2017
This morning our ride was to Jordans Mill. Eight of us set off from Letchworth, Sandra, Roy, Frank C, David R, Jeremy, Peter, myself and Geoff in the lead. We took a direct route there via Bedford Road, Arlesey, Henlow and Langford arriving at Jordans Mill just before twelve to be met by John and Bedford Paul. David didn't stop for lunch as he wanted to put in some extra miles and was on a restricted timescale. The restaurant had been renovated, I am not sure of the actual benefit, perhaps the throughput was a bit faster. The food was the same good quality, if a bit on the pricey side. Anyway lunch was enjoyable overlooking the river Ivel. John and Paul made their own way back as usual and the rest of us headed back in a group. We came back via Broom, Clifton, Henlow, Arlesey, Stotfold and Fairfield. Sandra, Frank, Peter and Geoff came back for tea and TimTams at mine before heading home. Peter and Geoff still had to cycle back to Luton, I hope they missed the rain. The weather was quite bright, mainly sunny but with quite a bit of cloud about. My mileage was about 21 at an average of 11.5. A nice leisurely ride as usual for the Wheelers.

Walkern - Hertfordshire
Thursday 16th June 2017
Our ride this month was to Walkern. Six of us set off, Frank C, Roy, Angie, Jeremy, myself and Geoff in the lead. We cycled via Wallington and Rushden arriving at the White Lion to find that the Kitchen was closed. We then headed over to the Rising Sun at Halls Green meeting Sandra and David on the way. We had lunch in the Garden at the Rising Sun. Afterwards, we split up with Roy, David and Sandra heading back via Graveley while the rest of us came back via Weston. Nice sunny day in the main, but the wind had picked up again. Our mileage was 20 at an average of 12. Quite a bit more for Geoff and Jeremy who had cycled over to Letchworth to start.

Old Warden (Shuttleworth Café) - Bedfordshire
Thursday 20th July
This morning our ride was to the Shuttleworth Areodrome Café, near Old Warden. Four of us set off from Letchworth Sandra and David W, myself and Frank C in the lead. We headed for Arlesey via Bedford Rd and the New Road and on to Henlow where Sandra and David decided to leave us and have a break, due to the strongish headwinds. Frank and I continued, meeting Bedford Paul at the Stanford crossroads. From there we all headed off via Ireland and then over to Old Warden for our Shuttleworth lunch. We joined John, Bridget and Gill who were already there. The usual reasonable value canteen style food was had by all. Try the Cornish Pasty and Chips - lovely. Anyway, after lunch John and Paul went their own ways as did Bridget and Gill. Frank had received a text from Sandra and David saying that they were in the Cock at Broom, so Frank and I headed over there to meet with them. After another coffee we all headed back to Letchworth via Langford, Henlow, Arlesey and through Fairfield. The weather today was not the best with some showers and quite strong winds. My mileage was 28 with an average of 12.

Stanford - Hertfordshire
Thursday 17 August 2017
Our ride today was to Stanford. Five of us left Letchworth Jacky, a new member, David R, Frank C, myself with Geoff in the lead. Our route out took us via Arlesey New Road and we were going to take the direct route to Stanford but decided to go via Jordans Mill with an extra loop through Southill due to making good time. On arrival at The Green Man David headed off without stopping for lunch. We were met there by Fred and John and a little later by Peter, Bridget and Gill. Initially the reception we received on entering the bar/restaurant, was to say the least, a little on the icy side. Apparently we were expected to book their near empty restaurant! Anyway we still had a pleasant lunch as we were in good company. I hope they didnt spit in our food. Afterwards Bridget and Gill headed off by car with Fred making his way back home to Pullox Hill and the rest of us taking our normal route back. John headed off at Arlesey for home with the rest of us continuing back via Stotfold turning right at the lights for Fairfield and Letchworth. Geoff and Peter sill had a few miles to do to get home to Luton, while Jacky had to head back to Holwell. The weather turned out to be quite nice after a doubtful start but was a little on the breezy side, especially on our return. My mileage was 23 at an average of 13.5.

Ley Green - Hertfordshire
