Letchworth Arts and Leisure Group is a unique not-for-profit organisation founded in 1987.
William Armitage and staff at David’s Bookshop had seen that the Ideas Fair and Autumn Book Fair generated so much interest that there might be sufficient enthusiasm for a local arts and leisure group offering year round activities. When they advertised a meeting to discuss their ideas, so many people turned up that it was standing room only.
LALG was born, and in a similar format to that of today: people with specific interests set up groups linked to the main organisation by a monthly newsletter. These included Art and Design, Film Clubs, History, Readers and Writers. The first LALG outing was a History Group trip to Durham Cathedral and Hadrian’s Wall.
Then and now, LALG provides fantastic value for money, with a regular newsletter offering households over 100 leisure activities, and discounts from over 40 local suppliers.
Membership now exceeds 1500 households in Letchworth Garden City and the surrounding areas.
Groups include wine appreciation, film, gardening, singing, theatre, art design, games, sports, outings, walking and much, much more. New groups are starting all the time.
All of this has been achieved entirely through the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers. LALG is a tribute to what determined like-minded people can achieve and it is there to be enjoyed.
So, if there is an interest you would like to pursue and you enjoy meeting new people, please look at the latest newsletter online or pick up a copy of it from David’s Bookshop, 14 Eastcheap, Letchworth Garden City.
