Eltham Palace - NOW FULL

Eltham is a unique marriage between a medieval and Tudor palace and a 1930s millionaire’s mansion. From the 14th to the 16th century it was an important royal palace, where monarchs often stayed and hunted in the surrounding parks. After centuries of neglect, Eltham was leased to Stephen and Virginia Courtauld in 1933, who built an up-to-the-minute house here that incorporated the great hall. We will meet at Letchworth station to take the off peak 9.50am (Baldock 9.47, Hitchin 9.55, Stevenage 10.01) direct train to London Bridge. Change at London Bridge for the train to Mottingham station.  The travel time is about 90 minutes.  Mottingham station is 1⁄2 mile (about 10 minutes’ walk) from Eltham Palace. Walk east from the station towards Court Road/A208; turn left onto Court Road/A208 for 0.3miles; then turn left into the entrance road to Eltham Palace and Gardens visitor centre.

There will be time for refreshments before our private tour starts at noon.  The tour of the house will take about 60 minutes.  After the tour there is plenty to explore including the award-winning gardens and an opportunity to take further refreshment.  We will have about 2 hours free time before retracing our steps to Mottingham station for the 15.39 train, which arrives in Letchworth at 17.10.  People can leave earlier, unescorted, if they wish and plans may change if it is wet.
