We are a non-religious group that is interested in churches and other places of worship – their architecture, monuments, art and history – and the people who have been associated with them over the years. Today we will visit All Saints’, Cambridge, also known as "The Painted Church".

Building work started in 1863 on land donated by Jesus College; for a time its spire was the tallest building in Cambridge. Nearly every surface is stencilled or hand-painted and the stained glass is by craftsmen including William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown and Philip Webb.

The church website has some nice photos and more information. It was written by Adrian, who will talk about the church and show us round. He said the church is one of the best-preserved Victorian churches in the country but the decorations are vulnerable so do not be tempted to touch them or the textiles. He also said that although the interior is lit it is still quite dim so beware of steps and other trip hazards. But he is encouraging us to take as many photos as we wish and to enjoy our visit.

Getting there

Meet in St Andrew’s Street, outside John Lewis, from 1.30pm. We will leave at 1.40pm; the church is a 10-15 minute walk away. Alternatively, meet at the church for a 2pm prompt start - the buses from some of the park & rides stop nearby. (The church is in Jesus Lane, opposite Jesus College.) Note that the church does not have a toilet.

Tickets

Book your place here: tickets are £5pp, LALG members only. (To buy one, click on the link at the beginning of this section.  Make sure you click through the pre-authorisation screen and then the registration (payment) screen - you will get a reference number when your payment has gone through. Don't worry if your card company asks for £0 authorisation - the correct amount will show on the next LALG screen and will be the amount deducted.)  All money will go to the church.

Please remember that a refund will not be given if you drop out for any reason unless someone from the waiting list (if we have one) takes your place.
