We are a non-religious group that is interested in churches and other places of worship – their architecture, monuments, art and history – and the people who have been associated with them over the years. Today we are visiting St John the Baptist, Cockayne Hatley, and the neighbouring manor house.
The tiny church is given 3 stars in Jenkins' 1000 Best Churches due to the quality of its glass and woodwork, even though they were moved here from elsewhere rather than being original installations. It also has the grave of the girl who was the inspiration behind Wendy in Peter Pan. We will have a talk about the church and a chance to look round.
We will also see Cockayne Hatley Hall, which is next to the church. There is very little left of its physical history (it’s about a third of the size of the original manor following a fire in the 1920s) but it does have lots of stories. Weather permitting, we will also be able to see the garden with lots of very old trees and Bedfordshire’s only Crinkle Crankle wall.
Meet at the Church ready for a prompt start at 2pm. There will be an opportunity for a cuppa between the 2 parts of our visit. And there is a toilet in the church.

Travel and Parking. The church and manor are just north of Wrestlingworth, on the road to Potton. Alternatively, take the Hatley Road from Potton. The postcode is SG19 2EA - note they are not in Cockayne Hatley village. Cockayne Hatley - Google Maps See also the image below.
The turning off Hatley Road is on a right-angle bend, by the bus shelter and the road to Cockayne Hatley Village. (Please avoid the other track that comes off Hatley Road towards the church.) This is a photo of the turning - take the track to the left of the shelter Hatley Rd - Google Maps
There is plenty of parking on the verge just outside the grounds.
