St Etheldreda's Hatfield

We are a non-religious group that is interested in churches and other places of worship – their architecture, monuments, art and history – and the people who have been associated with them over the years. Today we are visiting Hatfield.

Built when Hatfield Palace was home to the Bishops of Ely, it contains tombs of the Brocket and Cecil families and was given three stars in Simon Jenkins’ England’s Thousand Best Churches. We will have a talk about the church and its rich history, plus a tour of the building.

The church is providing refreshments for us. Note: there are no toilet facilities in the church but they are available in Hatfield House's Stable Yard, open to the public at no charge and a few minutes' walk away. There will be time for a visit before the tour if required.

Directions

Travel by train – we will leave Baldock 9.25am, Letchworth at 9.28am, Hitchin 9.33am (we can buy off-peak tickets as we’re not going to London). The church is a 15-minute walk from the station, including a short, steepish hill. 

Travel by car - parking in the Churchyard is restricted to about six vehicles; there is limited roadside parking. The church said most people park in Hatfield House's car park (no charge) which is very near to the church, just a short walk past the Old Palace and through the gatehouse. Meet at the church ready for a 10.30am prompt start.

• Members £5, non-LALG members £6. Note that all tickets cost £5, the non-members £1 supplement is payable in cash on the day. All money will go to the church.
• To buy ticket(s), click on the Tickets link below. Depending on your card provider, it may ask you to authorise payment of £0 - continue with the booking and the correct amount will be shown on the next web page for you to confirm the actual amount to be deducted.
• Don't forget to click on the final "register" button - don't stop when the payment is approved!
