Wine Discovery

Wine Discovery

Monthly wine tastings for those interested in discovering more about wines from around the world. Two Members take it in turn to present 6 wines, usually a mixture of sparkling white, white, red and occasionally a dessert wine.  Some months we push the boat out and those Members who love to cook show off their culinary skills, serving up delicious food to complement their selection of wines.

January

At our ‘same grape, different country’ presentation The Wine Society’s German Riesling was the best white. We also tasted how different wines can be from the Pinot Noir grape: some luscious and one that had us reaching for the spittoon!

Our Visit to France

Our second visit to France presented wines from the Burgundy region. Interestingly Burgundy produces more white wine (60%), with Chardonnay being the most common. The white wines presented also had a higher alcohol content than the red which is unusual. Sourcing a Burgundian cheese to accompany the wine was a challenge but eventually Epoisses, a renowned quite stinky cheese was sourced and served with a quince jelly.

October

October’s presentation of Croatian wines was a huge success and proved a very interesting theme with some extremely delicious and unusual wine.

Every choice was well received with the Matuško Dingač Red proving to be one of the most popular. Served with some authentic Croatian food from Hilary, it made for a great evening.

October

Our presentation at the end of October was by Charles and Chris who presented Italian wines from a small vineyard/producer from Le Marche region of Italy which they purchased on holiday. In Charles’s own words "this will really be a wine discovery evening" as they produce wines with some very specific Italian grapes.

April

April’s wine night was presented by Robert & Sheila entitled the Wine Society’s Champions. The night had a small attendance so the wine was flowing.

December 2015

What a way to finish off the year and a fitting finale to 2015.

December’s meeting was a great event and I would like to thank all of you who both participated and contributed towards the night, bringing such culinary delights both

savoury and sweet and a fantastic array of wines from around the world.

So, onwards to 2016 which I hope will bring new members, increased numbers to the regular events and some new and wonderful wines.

February 2015

Many thanks to all who helped out at the wine festival and especially to all those who attended and made it such a splendid event.

Almost 120 people turned up and it again exceeded our expectations and was a truly great festival, I'm already looking forward to 2014.

The presentation of South African wines by Ninesprings Wine went very well and a good night was had by all.

A huge thanks to all the members who supported the Wine Festival this year. The night was a huge success and I know that most who came are looking forward to next year’s event. Nigel.

Nigel would like to give a big thank you to Richard & Kate for the barbecue in July. The weather stayed dry although a little cool but an improvement on recent years.

Our trip to Chilford vineyard in September

A huge thank you to both Richard & Kate

February‘s wine discovery night was presented by Terry & Cheryl Masters,
