There is a very good Wikipedia article on the game of Piquet, its history, the rules, and some of the tactics. I suggest you ignore the rather turgid "background" section at the end!
Piquet
This is a relatively new group with about a dozen members so far - more will always be welcome!
We meet from 2pm to 4pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at the bar of the Broadway Hotel, Broadway, SG6 3NZ. See Group Events panel for details of forthcoming arrangements, including any exceptions.
Piquet is a fairly simple two-handed card game of French origin, easy to learn but with surprising subtleties. There is a more challenging variant called Auction Piquet, which we might play in future.
