The Avro Vulcan and the Cold War ... and More

Tuesday, June 4 2019       The Avro Vulcan and the Cold War ... and More

Approximately 20 group members listened intently to our speaker, Richard Clarkson from the Vulcan Restoration Trust who helps preserve and display Avro Vulcan XL 426. His talk covered the development and building of this iconic aircraft along with its operational history and eventual retirement. Richard finished his talk with details of the trusts current work at Southend Airport. Many in the audience had lived through the Cold War, for which the Vulcan was built to fight, and were taken back into recent history by mention of V bombers, the hydrogen bomb and ‘four-minute warning’. One member in attendance had, during his working career, been involved in the design of components for the aircraft. The unique photographs that illustrated his talk complemented the story perfectly. Richard deftly answered questions posed at the completion of his talk and the members showed their appreciation with a round of applause.
