When film makers use a piece of popular music in a movie, it’s referred to as a needle drop.  Amongst the first was 'The Graduate' setting a precedent using multiple songs from Simon and Garfunkel.  This was followed by Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, Hopper replaced the traditional film score composer with a memorable rock-and-roll soundtrack.

Martin Scorsese revolutionised the medium using popular pre-existing songs to set a specific tone or scene, then Quentin Tarantino took it to another level with films such as Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction.

In addition to needle drops, there are also numerous ‘Rockumataries’ about artists, concerts and tours, so plenty of subject headings to choose from. If you are still short of ideas we can include TV series as well.
