Every year on 21 June communities around the world come together to Make Music. It all started in France in 1982 where it was known as Fête de la Musique. By the early 90s, it was celebrated in eighty-five countries across five continents.
Make Music Day first came to the UK in 2012 and has been growing year on year. It has been a UK-wide coordinated initiative since 2017 with support and funding from a broad range of national organisations.
Letchworth had not had a Make Music event so we set out to change that. Some local musicians got together, in the sun, under a gazebo in Leys Square.
All gave their time and energy for free. Our audience sang along and we took a voluntary collection for humanitarian aid for the people of Ukraine.
In 2 hours we made £612.07, a fantastic result – thank you Letchworth! And thanks to all the musicians, volunteers, Letchworth Festival and Love Letchworth who made it happen.
