Guided tour of Welwyn Garden City (TBC)

We will travel by car to Campus West car park in Welwyn Garden City and meet for coffee at 10am. Refreshment stop details will be given nearer the time.

We will then have a guided tour of the town at 11am led by Angela Eserin, who used to be the Local Studies Librarian and is very knowledgeable about the features in the town. The walk will take approximately 90 minutes.

There will then be free time for lunch and we will reconvene at the Roman Bath complex, Welwyn Bypass Road, AL6 9FG.

The baths are a scheduled ancient monument, part of the Dicket Mead Roman villa complex. Excavations by the Welwyn Archaeological Society revealed the bath complex within a larger villa. The bath house is preserved under the motorway embankment within a steel vault and dates from the early third century, falling out of use in the mid-fourth century. There are three key rooms: unheated frigidarium (cold room), warm tepidarium and hot caldarium. A sophisticated hypocaust system provided underfloor and wall heating. We will learn about how the rooms were used by the Romans.
