Cinema Discussion Meeting (Zoom)

The July session of Cinema will be an exercise in making Film Connections. From an initial movie related stimulus, group members will take it in turns to make a movie connection, presenting their link and their thinking behind their choice. The connection choices will then be used for a wide-ranging discussion of cinema. An example of film connections is given below.

Film Connections:

1. The British film composer Ron Goodwin composed 71 movie scores …
2. And ‘71 is the title of a 2014 film set in Belfast,
3. Which city is also the title of a 2021 film directed by Kenneth Branagh.
4. Branagh has played several Shakespearean characters on screen, notably Hamlet,
5. Which play contains the lines ‘the slings and arrows of Outrageous Fortune’,
6. The latter two words being the title of a 1987 film starring Bette Midler and described as ‘a buddy comedy’.
7. Buddy comedies are a stable theme of films, the latest example of which is probably ‘A Real Pain’ teaming two cousins who make a trip to Poland to visit the Majdanek concentration camp where some of their family died.
8. Concentration camps have featured in several movies and Alfred Hitchcock was involved in the production of a post-war propaganda film, Night Will Fall, about the holocaust.
9. Hitchcock’s last British-made film was Frenzy set in London, for which Ron Goodwin composed the score.
