Cinema: Friday, 2nd May 14.00

As previously outlined, we’ll continue the Biopic topic at our May meeting (Friday, 2^nd ) and you have the possibility of analysing Citizen Kane (1941) (on BBC iPlayer) from the perspective of a (false) biographical film. If you don’t relish the opportunity of watching Orson Welles’s masterpiece yet again, please attempt the exercise from memory!

If even that doesn’t appeal, you’re invited to reflect on some/any of the biopic-related issues that arose during the April session:

1. The importance or otherwise of historical accuracy in biopics
2. Omission and creation – the challenge of portraying a person’s life on film in, say, two hours
3. The inherent (melo)dramatic nature of biopics
4. In media res as narrative strategy in cinema
5. The attraction of biopics for audience and for actors and directors
6. The evolution of biopics over cinema history

In addition to the above we’ve had a very interesting offer from a couple of Cinema members for the May session of an analysis of two female biopics dating from 2020 and 2022 respectively.
