Radio Amateurs

We meet for a chat about amateur radio subjects once a month on a Friday afternoon at 3pm in the Broadway Hotel, Letchworth.

We welcome LALG members who are currently active, those who may be looking to revive their amateur radio skills and also those looking to become a licensed Radio Amateur.

Since setting up this group several members either have become or are becoming active again on the amateur radio bands. New members are welcome to join us on a Friday afternoon whether or not they have an amateur radio transmitting licence. Advice can be given on how to obtain a transmitting licence or on setting up an amateur radio station.
See the events page for details of our next meeting.

At the tender age of 19 years, I obtained my full licence and enjoyed several years of activity using mainly morse code (CW) and some telephony. For various reasons there was then a very long pause in my radio activities (More than 50 years).  At first I had to build my own transmitters and receivers from the discreet components of the day, e.g. valves, resistors and capacitors but now it's very different.  Thanks to this LALG group which was formed in February 2025 and with help from the group's leader, it's been possible to catch up with modern radio technology and I'm now set up with the latest digital equipment and a long wire antenna enabling me to contact fellow amateurs in many different countries.

The good news is that although the technology has changed dramatically, morse code hasn't, not by a single dit or dah !
