Community Benefit Initiative (CBI)

LALG is a membership organisation for the people of Letchworth and surrounding communities. Its focus is the provision of arts and leisure opportunities for its members through its groups which organise talks, meetings, get-togethers, events, visits and more. These group activities are run by the members for the members. Very occasionally there may be proposals from members for new groups which fall outside the arts and leisure remit but which would confer a wider benefit on the local community and which have the support of other LALG members.

These potential groups shall be proposed by one or more LALG member and run by LALG members but are open to non-members who wish to support the work of the group but do not wish to join LALG for any other purpose.

An example of this sort of group is Blitz an Open Space. This group’s purpose is litter-picking. It organises litter picks in areas across Letchworth and the local area and involves outside groups such as the Scouts who also wish to serve their local communities. Litter-picks often attract outside assistance from people who have no further interest in LALG.

To enable this form of activity to continue within the LALG community the Committee is trialling a new form of group category to be called a Community Benefit Initiative (CBI). It should be noted however, that LALG does not seek to initiate the formation of CBIs but solely intends the title to be a category label for a viable, well supported group emerging from the LALG membership that does not fit the arts and leisure brief but does confer a concrete wider benefit on the local community.
