The Most Perfect Thing: Inside and Outside a Bird's Egg by Tim Birkhead

The ornithologist Tim Birkhead explains the life cycle of a bird's egg, from creation and fertilization to hatching. He discusses why they are different shapes, colours and patterns and describes how the latter two are so variable in guillemot eggs that no two are the same. Weird and wonderful facts about other birds' eggs are also written about: for example a cuckoo's egg spends 48 hours in the oviduct whereas other birds' spend just 24.

In addition to modern scientific knowledge about eggs, Birkhead also writes about historical collectors of birds' eggs and his own studies and bird watching experiences.

The book was short-listed for the Royal Society Science book prize and is reviewed on the Good Reads website.  It can be purchased from David’s Bookshop in Letchworth (LALG discount makes it very competitively priced), or ordered from the library.

We will discuss this book and related topics. All LALG members are welcome and there is no charge except for a drink. We expect to meet in The Orchard Café, Letchworth Sports and Tennis Club, Muddy Lane SG6 3TB but please check here a day or two before.

Exactly: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World by Simon Winchester

Precision in engineering and manufacture is essential in our lives although we may not appreciate how much we need it or why. Winchester explains what is meant by precision and why it is important: he describes the engineers, and their developments and methods, from the Industrial Age to modern production and equipment.

The book was short-listed for the Royal Society Science Book Prize. It can be purchased (with LALG discount) from David’s Bookshop in Letchworth, or ordered from the library.
