Welcome to a B….t free zone – poetry at no. 7

A Year in Poetry September 2017 - July 2018

We began the season as a group of nine and now there are eight of us; we are poorer for the loss of Patsy Hudson, who died on 31 May 2018. We loved Patsy for her sense of humour, her off-the-wall stories and her commanding reading voice. She was stoical, fun loving, unpredictable and a great companion. I have her photo on my desk as I type and she is looking at me now with a mischievous smile. I wish I had known her in her prime; but I’ll settle for the 6 years and be grateful that she chose to be one of our founding members in January 2012.

September 2016 – July 2017

This year we marked our fifth anniversary in July and look forward to many more years to come.

Our themes this year took shape around our usual mix of simple words which lend themselves to interesting and surprising interpretation. Our membership was unchanging and we reached our five year milestone.

September 2015 - July 2016

In September we learnt that Philip Larkin was to be commemorated in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey. His poetry, unfamiliar to most of us, seemed a good choice to begin the autumn season.  We admired his intelligence and craftsmanship but questions hovered over his attitude to the poor and disadvantaged. We were particularly interested in what he had to say about British life in the middle of the twentieth century, noting changes compared to now. We liked his ‘speaking truth to power’ but questioned his ambivalence with certain words.

September 2014 - July 2015

As we enter our fifth season the poetry group sails on - with seven founder members still involved. Success lies in sticking to a simple formula:

bring something you love, respect and want to share by reading it to others.

Poetry for Pleasure

Whatever the format - the strength of the group is in the poetry and behind the poetry are the people who choose it.

This has been a year of famine and plenty, with some memorable meetings and sometimes none at all.

September 2012 - July 2013

With its unpredictable take on mundane themes the poetry for pleasure group has completed its first full year of meetings.
