Hiding content on the website

SUPERCEDED BY EDITORS NOTES 2021

There are a number of different ways of hiding content on the LALG website, you need to choose the appropriate method depending on the effect you want to have, and the type of content. The techniques are:

  1. Deletion - the content is completely removed from the website and cannot be recovered except by restoring a backup or retyping, or if you are very lucky copying from a development system. Generally should only be used if you want to start again or have changed your mind about wanting the content.
  2. Unpublish - the content will disappear completely from the website for all users except administrators, it's still there and can be republished on request to an administrator.
  3. Archive - done by ticking the box next to archived on the edit screen for Groups and Articles. The content does not normally appear on user views, but can be accessed by searching and choosing to include archived content.
  4. Hidden - This option is available for groups only and is achieved by setting the group type to "Hidden". When a group is hidden it will not appear on the normal lists of groups or group searches under the groups menu, it will appear on the Tools / Hidden Groups option of the editors menu, and it will appear on normal site searches. This is for groups that are not Member's Activity Groups, i.e. they are used for LALG or web site organisation.
  5. Role & Permissions - Drupal has a general feature that a user may only access material that their role permits via the settings of the permissions system. This facility is only accessible to administators. Some additional permissions are granted by Organic Groups roles, which may be accessible to Web Editors to control.
  6. Future direction - it may be possible using Organic Groups to restrict content to members of groups after future website enhancements, not currently scheduled.

In general if material is no longer relevant the best technique to use is to set the Archive flag.

Notes for Groups

Deletion is NOT APPROPRIATE FOR GROUPS because other content types like articles and events have a link to a group which would be broken by removing the group, this is how the orphaned material on the website was created.
