25th Anniversary Celebration

Our November meeting was very special, as we were celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Group.  Just three members of the original group were present, but the big surprise was that altogether forty past and present members arrived to celebrate the event.
A selection of wines was presented by long term members, and started with a Cremant de Bourgogne chosen by George Barnes, who came up with the original idea of forming a wine tasting group in Letchworth.
Next was a Warden Vineyard Sparkling Brut made from a blend of three grapes provided by a long-term member Gill Hailstone.
George then served a Pinot Noir from New Zealand which evoked memories of the first tasting by the group when John Raines served a selection of Pinot Noirs from around the World, in a blind tasting.
Next, Carolyn Clayton, a former leader of the group, served us with a Wine Society’s Exhibition Stellenbosch.
This was followed by Robin Boar, another former leader, with a Baron de Ley Rioja 2010 vintage.
John Raines, the current leader, spoke about the early days of the group when Penfolds the Australian wine maker was prominent, and he had found a Penfolds Max’s Shiraz 2016 to mark the occasion.
Another veteran member Roy Tosh then completed the tasting of red wines with a Lirac Vignobles Abeille 2016 made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre.
Veronica Tomkins rounded off the celebration with a Rheinhessen 2016 Eiswein from Bingen-Dromersheim, a superb Dessert wine, accompanied by a slice of the birthday cake made by Ellen Barnes.
