Private Tour of The Manor, house and garden, Hemingford Grey

Friday, 26 August 2022 - 10:30am

Built circa 1130 The Manor is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Britain, made famous as “Green Knowe” by the author Lucy Boston. Lucy’s books include The Stones of Green Know, A Stranger at Green Knowe and many more. All Lucy’s books are for sale in the shop.
Lucy was born in 1892, went to Oxford University, served as a nurse in World War II and started writing books at the age of 60. Her son illustrated her books. Lucy died in 1990. The house is now occupied by Diana Boston.
Lucy was an accomplished needle woman, and The Manor holds an important collection of patchwork quilts that can be viewed in The Gallery.
The garden was laid out by Lucy and has a moat, topiary, old roses, award winning irises and herbaceous borders.
We will meet in front of the house for the start of our guided tour and will then split into two groups for the tour of the house. There will be time to view the garden before and after the tours.
Refreshments are not available at the house and there is not a picnic area in the garden. But there is seating in the garden. There are however benches by the river and in the playing field for picnics. Alternatively you can make your own reservation for lunch at The Cock, which is 400 yards from the house.
Travel is by car. There is limited parking at The Manor on the wide grass verge on the left of the drive. Additional parking in Glebe Road. Allow plenty of time to park and walk to the house. There is one toilet on site for visitors.
