Race Night

Saturday 13 October - 7:00pm

An unusual venue for horse racing: The Cloisters in Barrington Road, Letchworth Garden City, which was built in 1905 as an open-air school dedicated to psychology and where students were taught skills from the Arts and Crafts movement.

Doors open 6.30pm, with the first race starting at 7.00pm. At the start of the evening, our professional compere will introduce and explain the format of the evening. Once the formalities are over and the horses for the first race have been paraded on the large video screen, the ‘punters’ will be invited to place their bets at the tote booths provided. When the race is finished and the payout dividend has been calculated and announced, the lucky victors will be asked to collect their winnings.

Free hot dogs and chips or vegetarian option included.

Tickets will be on sale at the Tourist Information Centre from 1 September until 10 October, priced at £6 for LALG members (£8 non-members). .

Membership renewal

If you haven’t yet renewed your membership and received the new yellow card then please renew your membership as soon as possible.

Membership renewal for 2018/19 is £14, or just £10 if you choose to have the newsletter online only.

For renewals, please do consider paying by bank transfer, there is then no need to fill in a form or make a trip to David’s. However, please do ensure that you put your initial, surname and LALG membership number as your reference – we will then pick this up from our bank statement and issue your new membership card.

Otherwise, please use the form at www.lalg.org.uk/join and take or send it to David's Bookshop on Eastcheap along with your cheque. Thank you!

Membership is from now until the end of August 2019 for the whole household. Have a look at the groups on the website and see just how much could gain from belonging to LALG over the next 12 months: the activities, events and friendships. And of course the excellent discounts offered from over 30 local shops and businesses.

Members Survey 2018

2018 LALG Members’ Survey

This year the survey is on the website only. It is at www.lalg.org.uk/survey and we would be very grateful if you could spare about 10 minutes to complete it.
It will run until 8 September and the results will be online by 8 October 2018 and in the November newsletter.

Golf Tournament

Tuesday 23 October

The Autumn tournament will again be at Wyboston Lakes golf course. It is an interesting and
attractive course with some water hazards but quite flat and not overly strenuous.

There will be the usual bacon butty and coffee on arrival by 9.00am and, as has become the norm the competition will be a Texas Scramble. Tee offs will be from Hole 1 from 10.00am. I am hoping that there will be a good mix of ladies and men. After the competition there will
be a 2-course meal. There will be a vegetarian option.

The aim is to produce mixed ability teams of 4 with roughly the same collective gross handicap, teams to be revealed on the day, except the current holders of the LALG Challenge Cup (Brian Burt, Colin Davies, Paul Bigley and Gillian Moore) will remain as a team.

Payment to be made on the day, which will be £45.00 but any noshows (not previously notified to me by the previous Friday) will also be expected to pay. To secure a place please ring Michael Homfray-Cooper as below, after 22nd July with details of your handicap and any special dietary requirements.

Get Fit with LALG in 2018

We are also considering new groups including aerobics, Nordic walking, Pilates, walking football, walking netball and even Pickleball, a racquet sport using wooden paddles and a polymer ball.

If any of these appeal to you, or you have any other suggestions, please leave your contact details at David’s Bookshop or email armitagewiliam@hotmail.co.uk

What is LALG?

What we are - What we do

LALG – Letchworth Arts & Leisure Group – an amazing organisation – started in Letchworth, envied and copied by other towns.  We are an umbrella organisation embracing around ninety groups of interests and activities, mainly in or around Letchworth, Hitchin, and Baldock, but extending to Stevenage and surrounding villages.

All the groups are self-sufficient and the LALG subscription (from £10 a year) ensures a monthly printed newsletter, showing all their activities, and access to them all. Membership includes the WHOLE HOUSEHOLD. We have over 1500 households and are growing steadily. Click here to go to our membership page.
