What are teenagers and when did they emerge in the west? Do they still exist in the old sense?

Michael Williams will argue that, properly understood, the term refers not a sequence of years but a phase in life in which young men and women partake in a common culture during the period between the onset of sexual maturation and the assumption of adult responsibilities.

Once this gap barely existed. For a few decades in the last half of the 20th century it extended to coincide with the teen years. Now it can extend well into the twenties and beyond. Instead of teenagers we have kidults.
