FREE Talk: The Settlement - 100 years

Wednesday, 16 December 2020 - 2:30pm

A fascinating illustrated talk at 2.30pm (NOT 7.30pm) by Kate Thompson about Letchworth Adult Education Settlement which first opened on 8 May 1920. Now, in its centenary year it is one of only a handful of such institutions still operating.

In 1927 the Educational Settlement was described as: "a centre in which men and women gather to pursue knowledge and wisdom in harmonising fellowship; also a centre of co-operation and social life for all the agencies for adult education in the neighbourhood, while it organises co-operatively work which such agencies separately neither wish nor are able to undertake."

Kate will describe how this local treasure grew and changed, to continue to provide a much-valued facility in the first garden city, as well as a service to neighbouring towns and villages in the days before mass car ownership.
