January 2011 Meeting - Looking forward to Spring

Stuart Patch presented a selection of white wines and Doug Rule offered us his choice of reds. The wines selected were chosen to be light and fresh – to revive our palates after the heavy food and wines of the festive season...

Stuart’s selection of wines, all of which came from Waitrose, included a fruity Wolf Blass 2007 President’s Selection Chardonnay and an alluring organic 2010 Yalumba Viognier from South Australia, a delightfully crisp 2010 Cowrie Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and a lovely, delicate 2009 Torres Vina Esmeralda from Catalunya that was an unusual blend of moscatel and gewurztraminer.

Doug, after some serious home tasting, presented a selection of light and medium bodied red wines from the Wine Society’s range. Starting with a light, fresh and fruity Ponte Pietra 2009, a merlot and corvina blend from Northern Italy, he followed it with a Château de Pitray 2007, another merlot rich wine this time from the Bordeaux appellation Côtes de Castillon on the north bank of the Dordogne. He continued with a Cheverny Rouge, Enclos du Petit Chien, 2009, a delightful blend of pinot noir, gamay, cabernet franc and cot (malbec) from the Loire Valley and concluded with another wine from the Loire Valley, a Touraine Gamay, Première Vendange, 2009, a delicious velvety gamay.

Altogether, a fine selection of wines that got the New Year off to a good start and, more importantly, that were much appreciated by members.
