Bevis Marks Synagogue & London Mithraeum

Thursday, 6 September 2018

We will take the train to Moorgate, changing at Finsbury Park, then walk to a coffee/tea shop.  We will then walk on to the synagogue and have a guided tour of the Grade I listed building opened in 1701 by the first Sephardim in the City of London. We have been asked to dress respectfully - eg no shorts, sleeveless shirts/Tshirts etc.

After lunch (plenty of cafes or bring a picnic) we will meet at Mansion House to visit the Mithraeum to learn about the Roman cult of Mithras and see the temple remains – masonry, but enhanced by mists and lights - and local archaeological finds. We will walk back to Moorgate in time for a cheap day return train home.

If the trains run to schedule we will additionally visit one of the city's churches.

Each “walk” will be on pavements and take about 10mins.
