November 2016 Meeting - An eclectic selection with quiz

This month's presentation was given by Martin and Auriol who made a varied selection of wines and tested the group's knowlege. The wines are listed below...

The Wines

Pepp Gruner Veltliner 2015 Austria 12% Wine Society £7.25

The Gruner Veltliner is a classic Austrian grape.   The vines are planted on south-east-facing granite slopes in north-eastern Austria. The climate is very dry, which causes the vines to dig deeper into the soil, imparting more delicate, complex character to the grapes.

Called "the green wine" - highly aromatic with pear, apple and lemon notes, a touch a spritz on the palate and more orchard fruits and white pepper on the finish.

Great as an aperitif or with seafood dishes.

Swartland limited Release Viognier 2015 South Africa 13% Majestic £8.99

Again the vineyards are situated in high weathered granite slopes, well known for its low yield dryland bush vines which results in excellent wines with distinctive character.

Complex flavours of citrus, orange and peach aromas with a well integrated mouth feel and length on the palate.

A lovely wine to drink by itself or with roast duck, curries and other rich, creamy dishes.

Morgenhof Estate Chenin Blanc 2015 South Africa 14% Waitrose £8.99 (normally £11.99)

Part-fermented in French oak barrels to add a rich, toasty, cashew-nut dimension.

A wonderful expression of citrus and lime with good oak integration on the nose. These flavours explode onto a full creamy palate that finishes with good crispness.

Ideal with fish, poultry & Thai dishes.

Agenda Dao 2014 Portugal 13% Majestic £7.99

Grape: Touriga Nacional, Alfrochiero, Tinta Roriz

A delightfully soft and rounded wine with loads of plum and bramble flavours plus touches of herbs, Judicious use of oak adds a slight spiciness to the finish.

Perfect with herby roast lamb.

Madfish Western Australia Pinot Noir 2014 13.5% Wine Society £8.95

With the grapes mainly coming from the cool Great Southern region, this Australian pinot made by Howard Park has a lovely redcurrant-and-spice nose, fine tannins and plenty of summer-fruit and berry character on the palate.

Delicate and elegantly structured with flavours of red berry fruits, clove and anise spice and a silky persistent finish.

Perfect with prepared meats such as ham, also oven roasted salmon fillet.

Parcel Series Reserva Tempranillo 2008 15% Majestic £9.99

This is everything you would expect from a top notch barrel aged Spanish wine. Red fruit flavours are overlaid with mature flavours of leather, dried fruit and spice.

Perfect with roast lamb.
