March 2013 Meeting - Italian Wines

Bev Bollons was the guest speaker at our March meeting and brought along a fantastic selection of Italian wines...

This was a really enjoyable evening that allowed us to taste wines we would never otherwise have tasted. Bev is an independent wine dealer based in Letchworth, Beverley Bollons’  Wine Collection http://www.bbwinecollection.co.uk/

The Wines

Sacchetto Glera Frizzante IGT 10.5%

Glera is the name of the grape used in the production of Prosecco. This is a delicious fresh fruity little wine with apple and pear flavours and a gentle fizz , makes a lovely aperitif if mixed with Campari or Cassis.

Ampelo Verdeca Puglia IGT 2011 12.5%

A fresh dry style of wine with aromas of pear and dried peaches followed by lovely full fruit flavours on the palate, and a rich finish. Good with seafood or white meat in light sauces.

Michele Chiarlo Barbera D’Asti DOCG 2010 13.5%

A superb wine from the award winning vineyards of Michele Chiarlo Elegant and approachable, full of ripe fruit and spice. Will age for up to 5 years.

Vigne di Chiarlo Monferrato DOC 2010 13.5%

This is the latest addition to the Chiarlo portfolio, made from the Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes the wine is elegant and richly textured with excellent flavours of ripe blackcurrant, cherry, chocolate and spice. Great with Carpaccio of beef or turkey.

Luccarelli Negroamaro Puglia IGP 2011 13.5%

A well-structured wine with an intense bouquet; warm and soothing with sweet plum fruit complemented by notes of spice followed by velvety tannins and a smooth finish.

Luccarelli Old Vines Primitivo di Manduria DOP 2009 14.5%

This is one of my favourite wines, produced from old bush vines the grapes give deep and complex aromas of prunes, cherry jam, spice and tobacco followed by just a huge juicy mouthful of wonderful dark berry fruit, chocolate and savoury oak.
